On June 11th, 2013 the Queens Chapter of the National Stuttering Association held their last meeting before the annual conference in Scottsdale, Arizona. The attendees at the meeting were pleased to hear that the chapter will be hosting another Met Game at Citi-Field at the end of the summer. Stay tuned as there will be details to follow regarding this social event!

As the meeting got underway, attendees discussed the idea of the variety of blocks that persons who stutter experience. Stuttering is different from one person to the next. We cannot all rely on the same techniques to assist us in easing out of a block or implementing easy onsets to a “hard” word. One method that was suggested to help with anticipating a block was the idea of Voluntary Stuttering. Voluntary Stuttering consists of stuttering on purpose, on words you are or are not intimidated by. One attendee shared that Voluntary Stuttering helps him tremendously but he understands that is not for everyone. Another attendee shared that her stuttering fluctuates so a technique that works for her today may not work for her tomorrow, depending on the severity of her stuttering in certain situations.

Attendees agreed that it is important to identify others who stutter and let them know they are not alone. The Queens Chapter is proud to announce that Stutter Social, a media source that allows viewers to connect with people who stutter via video chat is now an official association under the International Stuttering Association. If you would like more information regarding Stutter Social and how to become connected, please visit www.stuttersocial.com. In addition, the Long Island Chapter of the NSA was recently restarted. If you live in the NYC/Long Island area and you would like more information regarding this chapter, please contact stutter@nsalongisland.org. Lastly, the Queens Chapter will be attending a Toastmasters session in July to support voluntary speakers and share the experience of public speaking with others. Please continue to check our website for more information regarding this inspirational event.

As always, the Queens Chapter would like to thank Starbucks and Fat Boys Pizza of Fresh Meadows for supplying us with delicious treats at our meetings. We hope to see all of you at the conference or at Citi Field when we take stuttering out to the ballgame with the Mets! Until next time, don’t be afraid to be a fruitloop in a world of cheerios. Stay strong and stutter beautifully!
