Happy July Everyone! With summer in full swing, the Queens Chapter of the NSA met on Monday, July 30th to reflect on the annual NSA conference and to share their experiences of stuttering with one another. The chapter was over joyed to welcome to two new faces to their July meeting! As optional introductions began, it was clear that those PWS who attended the annual NSA conference in St. Petersburg, Florida had much to share with the group. One attendee joyfully stated “the conference changed my life and I can’t wait for next year’s conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.” Those attendees who were unable to attend the conference this year eagerly listened about the amazing experiences of their fellow stutterers.   The first topic discussed at the meeting was the idea of dealing with the “real world” as persons who stutter. Attendees mentioned the National Stuttering Association helps them to cope with their stuttering, as well as the powerful but challenging tool of advertising.  One attendee referred to NSA meetings as visiting a store. Participants are able to get ideas of how others cope with their stuttering and apply it to their everyday life. It is important to note that what works for ...

Happy Summer Everyone! On June 25th, the Queens Chapter of the NSA took a break from the heat and joined together to share their experiences with stuttering. During optional introductions, one attendee provided insight into the profound impact an NSA meeting can have on one’s life. He stated that “NSA meetings provide me with a lot of energy to carry me throughout the weeks in between our meetings.” It amazes me that regardless of how much time passes, the underlying feeling of acceptance and encouragement brought to life at each meeting never seems to fade.   As the meeting progressed, attendees discussed the idea of dating, while being a person who stutters. It is important to remember that stuttering is a small part of the person that you are. Stuttering does not define who you are and you must put forth all of your qualities and aspirations when pursuing a relationship. One attendee mentioned that he feels it is important to advertise your stuttering on a date, but not to let it over shine the real you. Granted, it can be very intimidating to make a good impression while advertising your stuttering to a significant other but if you are comfortable in ...

With May just around the corner, the Queens Chapter of the NSA met on Monday, April 30th at St. John’s University to discuss the challenges of being a person who stutters (PWS). During optional introductions, one attendee shared that before coming to NSA meetings, she hid her stuttering all the time and couldn’t handle all that stuttering entails. She went on to say that by attending NSA meetings, she is able to see, hear and feel what other PWS experience on a daily basis. I feel that this analogy perfectly describes the impact an NSA meeting can have on one’s life. We are always looking for new attendees to attend our meetings and gain a better understanding that they are not alone. Our next meeting is on May 21st and we hope to see you there! As the night progressed, the recurring topic of acceptance was discussed. That “what if” question always seems to linger overhead and this meeting was no different. What if I didn’t stutter? What if I was fluent all the time? One attendee shared that “ if I didn’t stutter, fluency would be a different situation and I would not be able to measure my success in ...

Happy April everyone! With spring in the air, the Queens Chapter of the NSA met on Monday, April 2nd to discuss the challenges and obstacles that stuttering can entail. At the Queens Chapter, we encourage participation during introductions and group time but stress that it is not mandatory and we respect the fact that if you don’t want to share, you don’t have to. With that being said, all attendees graciously contributed to two great discussions about stuttering.   After introductions, where one attendee shared that he enjoys seeing how the group impacts others and how it has helped him to grow and learn more about his personal experiences with stuttering, attendees at the meeting split up into two groups. The teens’ first topic of conversation was the idea of what they want others to know about stuttering. One teen shared that “stuttering is not something you should be embarrassed about, but something you should be proud of.” As a PWS, I feel I spend so much time thinking about what others will think that I forget to remember how I feel about my own stuttering. The teens felt that even though people might laugh at you, you shouldn’t let them effect ...
