We are officially into Conference Season. Several of us have our registration completed for the upcoming conferences. We heard a bit about these conferences at last meeting but once again want to encourage you to ask any questions that you may have about them. About last month's meeting, nobody who was at the meeting in April needs to be told about how much of a great meeting that was. We had 7 new people and welcomed back some of our friends that we haven’t seen in a while. It was great to see the amount of participation. As I sat thinking of what to write for this month’s newsletter, I reviewed my notes and noticed so many different, interesting, topics that were brought up and discussed. One person brought up the fact that they had never met another PWS until our meeting. How amazing that we filled a room with over 20 people from so many walks of life. As someone said, “how nice it is to meet other people who are extremely cool” and also stutter. We talked about when to share or disclose that we stutter and how some do it to help put listeners at ease, while others ...

June 2010 (Meeting on May 24)

Kick off the summer season right and chill with your NSA family. Those of you who already attend know that meetings often take on a life of their own, and last meeting was no exception. We began by discussing how people who stutter (PWS) felt about therapies and support groups focusing on “being fluent.” Should therapies for teens and adults include an element of “self-acceptance?” As adults and teens who stutter, is striving to be fluent really our ultimate goal? Members generally felt that always striving to be fluent may be an unrealistic and that self-acceptance is important as we strive to become more fluent or to stutter more easily. We also welcomed a few more newcomers. It’s always awesome to listen to people that wonder why groups like this haven’t existed in the past. It just helps us to appreciate the good things we have going. However, the fact is these groups have existed for a long time. Our growth to this point has been based on people talking about the group and spreading the word. So please do your part and impact someone else’s life by letting people know about our group, the upcoming NSA and Friends conferences, and the ...

Spring has FINALLY Sprung! After a long, harsh winter of snow and rain, it’s time to warm up! What better way than to come out and get together with your local NSA family. At our last meeting we talked about some of our most recent challenges and how we handled them. We also talked about the new study that was published about genetics and how specific locations have been identified on genes in some people who stutter (PWS). This is one of the most significant findings in stuttering research in a long time. This is of course excluding Heather's research which we will be learning about and playing with in the near future. It was interesting to hear the different perspectives on this topic. Some felt a sense of confirmation of something they suspected for a long time, others expressed how it would help therapists treat PWS, and still others felt a sense of relief to know there is evidence of a genetic basis to stuttering in some people. Other intriguing topics were covered as well; from the everyday challenges we all face, to the special encounters such as the ones we face at work meetings (or in school). People wondered aloud ...

I hope everyone enjoyed the snow! Now that we just had another storm it's time to "dig out" and to to our Monday meeting for some more good times, great stories, and inspiring conversation . I noticed a common theme that arose during our last meeting. People kept sharing frustrating experiences about listeners who just “didn’t get it” or interviewers who didn’t even want to meet face to face, instead judging someone based on a phone conversation alone. Another person who stutters (PWS) shared an experience at work in which a customer lost her patience and wanted help from someone else. A lot of people who stutter (PWS) may have encountered similar situations at some point in their lives. The trick here is how do we as PWS handle them, and more importantly, what do we take away from the experience. The answer is that there is no answer, that’s what makes us all so strong and unique in our own way. There may come a time when we might feel comfortable explaining to the listener what just happened and why. Of course, we all go at our own pace and comfort level, but remember that stepping out of your comfort ...

Hope everyone is having a fantastic winter and enjoying a healthy and prosperous start to the New Year! Something very special and very real happened when I started thinking about our last meeting and what to write in this newsletter. I started to reflect on ideas and topics and on ways to put them together, but I couldn’t focus. I kept seeing and hearing all the special people in that room that touched me in so many ways. ...

Hope everyone had a very Happy and Joyous Holiday Season and may 2010 be filled With Health and Success! Let’s get the New Year started off right! Yes, it’s that time of the year again, time to make our resolutions that for some reason are so hard to keep. Well, how about a new one this year? Anyone who hasn’t attended a meeting yet knows exactly what I’m talking about.  That’s right, “step out of your comfort zone”, come out and share your story, or just come to “hang out” and listen. What better way to start off the New Year then to meet and greet a new friend or friends that would love to hear and share with you. We all can be nervous about a “new challenge” and the fear that comes with it, but what better, more comfortable place to give it a shot. I can only speak for myself when I say this chapter, these meetings have been more fulfilling then I could have ever imagined. I want to again say “Thank You” to everyone for a great 2009 full of amazing meetings and moments.  It’s really true that time flies when you’re having fun because this ...
