June 2010 (Meeting on May 24)

Kick off the summer season right and chill with your NSA family.

Those of you who already attend know that meetings often take on a life of their own, and last meeting was no exception. We began by discussing how people who stutter (PWS) felt about therapies and support groups focusing on “being fluent.” Should therapies for teens and adults include an element of “self-acceptance?” As adults and teens who stutter, is striving to be fluent really our ultimate goal? Members generally felt that always striving to be fluent may be an unrealistic and that self-acceptance is important as we strive to become more fluent or to stutter more easily.

We also welcomed a few more newcomers. It’s always awesome to listen to people that wonder why groups like this haven’t existed in the past. It just helps us to appreciate the good things we have going. However, the fact is these groups have existed for a long time. Our growth to this point has been based on people talking about the group and spreading the word. So please do your part and impact someone else’s life by letting people know about our group, the upcoming NSA and Friends conferences, and the loads of information on their websites (links to their sites from www.nsaqueens.com).

If you have not attended yet, now is your chance to experience something new and meet great people at the same time. Come out and give it a shot.

As different and unique as we all are, stuttering bonds us, but doesn’t define us. It is only a piece of us. It also empowers us with the choice to help other people who stutter and people who may not understand stuttering.

Hope to see you at the next meeting!!
