Hello to all! Hope everyone is having a fantastic summer.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the next meeting of the Queens Chapter of the NSA is here. In our last meeting, some interesting topics were discussed. We talked about how different PWS (People Who Stutter) handle different situations. In a class setting, should we disclose to our professor that we are a PWS? What if the reaction is a negative one? What if this particular person never met a PWS? Are we helping or hurting ourselves by disclosing such personal information? What’s so intriguing about a topic like this is that there is no right or wrong answer. What you will get are many interesting viewpoints from the different perspectives in the room. We discussed being “open” or overt with people closer to us as well. Does this help or hurt? How difficult it can be to discuss stuttering with friends and family? Discussion about the perspectives of the listener was another topic of interest, and helped some to recognize and appreciate that it can be a challenge for the listener too. We also discussed about the lack of understand about stuttering by others and how it may cause them to say something or do something insensitive.

We are officially out of Conference Season and into Conference Reflection mode. Some people reading this might be wondering what I’m talking about? Well, I can tell you from firsthand knowledge that when I got home from each of the five conferences I’ve attended, I couldn’t wait to share my experiences with anyone who would listen, especially my friends in our Queens group. So in case you missed it, some of our members attended the NSA Conference in Cleveland, while others attended the Friends Conference in Chicago. There are sure to be stories abound of strength and growth and laughter too! These conferences in many cases are life changing events! So come share or just listen. Oh yeah, last but definitely not least, we picked up a few quality new friends along with way. So you can expect to see several new faces at this meeting.

As different and unique as we all are, stuttering bonds us, but doesn’t define us. It is only a piece of us. It also empowers us with the choice to help other people who stutter and people who may not understand stuttering. It’s nice to hear everyone’s input in addition to the support and encouragement throughout the meeting. Hope to see you at the next meeting!!

Make sure to check out Nina’s new blog entries…. that’s right — two! They truly are a MUST READ FOR ALL! Thanks Nina!

Oh yeah, one more thing. The Mets game that we were planning is now a reality. Not just a reality, but AN NSA EVENT OF GRAND PROPORTIONS!!! We will be hosting an event that will involve 100 of our friends from both NSA and Friends (The National Association for Young People Who Stutter) on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 1:15pm when the METS will be facing their arch rivals the BRAVES. Tickets will be $8. For more information and to get tickets – Click here.

Sincerely,

John and Mitch
