The time is NOW! Yes, I’m talking to YOU! Anyone who is reading this and has CONSIDERED coming to an NSA Queens Chapter meeting, but hasn’t, there is NO better time! Why? Good question; because we are officially into what a lot of people who stutter (especially members of the NSA family) refer to as “Conference Season”. Our next meeting will not only contain it’s usual buzz and excitement, it will also serve as a great opportunity for us to share and learn about our experiences and anxieties about attending this year’s annual conference. (see below for more information) If you enjoy the warmth, support and understanding that are constants at NSA Queens chapter meetings, then you will love the experience of an annual conference. With the popularity of the King’s Speech, it looks like this year will be the biggest ever (more than 600 people). There is no better way to find out what this year’s conference has in store then to come to our meeting THIS Monday.

As I reviewed my notes for this newsletter, a common thread stuck out between the lines – People really enjoy coming to our meetings. It’s not easy to find someone in the room who doesn’t at some point mention how much our meetings mean to them. Another theme that showed throughout the meeting was how enthusiastic people were to help spread the word about the our group and stuttering awareness. We discussed different ways to reach people who are not aware of our group and how beneficial it has been to people who stutter.

Another important topic that arose during our meeting was how awesome the feeling when we step out of our comfort zone and challenge ourselves. We went on to break off into small groups and read the International Stuttering Association’s Rights of a PWS, which I found very interesting. However, my favorite part of the exercise was when group discussion resumed how many people volunteered to challenge themselves by reading aloud. A real inspiration for others who might now be contemplating doing the same.

Thank you to everyone for making our meetings such a great place to share, listen and support! As different and unique as we all are, stuttering bonds us, but doesn’t define us. It is only a piece of us and we chose how it can shape us. It also gives us the insight and can fuel the courage which often is empowering to the next person who reaches out. It’s nice to hear everyone’s input in addition to the support and encouragement throughout the meeting.

Hope to see you at the next meeting!

John
